I came out around the age of 14. From the age of 10 I felt different but was not sure why. I had no interest in girls really apart from just wanting to be friends with them. I didn’t really have many friends growing up, just a couple at school and one or two who were neighbours. When I was about 13 going on 14 and at high school I realised I liked some guys more than others; more than in just a friendly way. One day my female friend told me that she fancied this guy in one of our classes and I said that I thought he had a nice ass. She came running after me with her mouth open asking if I was gay. I didn’t feel awkward and it was all fine. After a while I told my few male friends at school and they were cool with it too. They asked a couple of questions then we carried on with what we were doing! "I told a couple of teachers just in case anything happened and I got support from them too."

When a few of the people in my year found out things got more interesting. Most of them were fine about it, some asked stupid questions and one straight guy was worried in case I liked him. I told him I didn’t fancy him and he had nothing to worry about! I had a couple of jokes played on me at school about me coming out. Once a couple of guys put a letter in bag supposedly from a guy who said he might be like me too. I knew it was a joke and so I approached the guy about it and we played on it a bit, turning the joke around.
My mum was upset about me being gay at first but was OK in the end. My grand parents took a bit longer to deal with it. I did experience a few instances of homophobia in the workplace; mainly name calling but mostly.

"Overall I’d have to say that my coming out story was a pretty positive one."
